UNA NOVA ESPÈCIE NIDIFICANT PER MENORCA, L’ARPELLA D’AIGUA

Fa unes setmanes s’ha confirmat la cria d’una nova espècie per l’illa de Menorca, l’arpella d’aigua Circus aeroginosus.
L’arpella d’aigua és un rapinyaire de mida mitjana molt lligat a ambients aquàtics amb vegetació palustre i, en menor mesura, a zones de cultiu de cereals. Tot i la seva àmplia distribució al dos hemisferis i la important població nidificant a la veïna illa de Mallorca, concretament al Parc Natural de s’Albufera, no existeix cap informació que indiqui que s’hagi reproduït mai amb anterioritat a l’illa, on sempre s’ha considerat com una espècie hivernant i migrant en ambdós passos, primaveral i de tardor.
A la primavera del 2014, i després de diverses observacions que indicaven la presència d’una parella amb clars signes d’intent de reproducció al Prat de Son Bou, els ornitòlegs de la Societat Ornitològica de Menorca, Juan Jose Carreras i Joan Florit, van iniciar un seguiment al llarg del període de nidificació que malauradament no va aconseguir confirmar la cria. Aquesta primavera (2015) es van tornar a repetir les observacions primaverals d’una parella a la mateixa zona amb un comportament que tornava a mostrar clars indicis d’intent de cria. Desprès d’uns mesos d’incertesa i diverses visites a la zona, aquest any sí que es van poder observar els primers vols matussers de tres jovenets. La primera observació es va produir el darrer cap de setmana de juliol quan el nostre company i amic Richard Barnes va observar tres joves de l’any acompanyats per un mascle adult en els seus primers dies fora del niu. Posteriors visites de membres de la SOM van ratificar i documentar fotogràficament la presència dels tres exemplars joves pels voltant de la zona de cria amb el típic comportament d’individus joves que comencen a iniciar-se en el vol.
Es confirma així la cria de l’arpella d’aigua a l’illa al 2015, sense descartar que també ho hagués pogut fer l’any passat. S’uneix aquesta a un bon nombre d’espècies que s’han anat descobrint els darrers anys com a nidificants a l’illa, com ara l’agró roig Ardea purpurea, el suís Ixobrychus minutus, el rabassot menut Aythya nyroca, l’estornell negre Sturnus unicolor o l’àneda blanca Tadorna tadorna, entre d’altres.
Tot i l’alegria de comprovar com una espècie nova cria a la nostra illa, la SOM és conscient que de moment es tracta d’un fet puntual i escàs que s’ha d’anar seguint en els propers anys per saber si es manté i si la població pot arribar a augmentar. És evident la importància d’aquest fet per a la biodiversitat de Menorca i la necessitat de preservar un indret tant vital per a l’avifauna menorquina com el Prat de Son Bou.
