Al 2012 la Societat Ornitològica de Menorca va realitzar una primera prospecció a tota l’illa per localitzar les zones de cria de l’abellerol, estimant també el nombre de parelles que formaven cadascuna de les colònies.
Aquest any hem començat el segon any d’estudi per acabar de perfilar el mapa de l’illa amb les zones de cria i estimar el més acurat possible el nombre de parelles reproductores.
L’abellerol és un espècie estival a l’illa, que passa els hiverns a l’Àfrica subsahariana. Possiblement sigui un dels ocells més vistosos per la seva coloració de quans arriben a ca nostra. A l’hora de criar, utilitza zones arenoses (dunes, taluds, terrenys arenosos…) on excava un túnel de més d’un metre, al final del qual diposita els ous.
Com vos podeu imaginar, el fet de que l’època de cria es solapi amb l’estiu i que les zones de cria estiguin al voltant de les platges, fan que les molèsties humanes siguin importants. Això sumat a la manca de informació sobre l’espècie és el que ens va fer iniciar l’any passat aquest estudi, amb l’objectiu de conèixer més a fons la situació actual de l’espècie a l’illa. Amb aquestes dades podrem valorar en un futur la tendència de l’espècie a l’illa, les amenaces o alteracions que pateixen les colònies de cria, tenir més arguments empírics per protegir zones o aturar futures actuacions agressives…, tenint en compte sempre que es tracta de la principal població de les Balears.
Des de la SOM volem convidar a participar en aquest estudi a totes les persones amants dels ocells, en particular, o de la natura en general. Ho podeu fer de dues formes. (1) Fent-nos arribar informació d’observacions d’abellerols a qualsevol banda de l’illa entre els mesos de juny i juliol, detallant el lloc, la data i, si es possible, el nombre d’individus. (2) Col•laborar amb els censos que farem al llarg d’aquest mes i fins la segona setmana de juliol a diferents zones de l’illa.
